ED-09: Science
------------
1098 Science Small Programs Disk
------------
Biology
is an educational program about cell biology. It contains a graphic
tutorial, practice and test. BASICA and CGA required.
BuckySpin 2.0 (BUCKY)
Acrobits
$1
displays, rotates, translates, and scales 3-D images of fullerenes (hollow
carbon molecules), geometrical solids and buckyballs (truncated icosahedron).
(Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8891.)
Chemist
Zenka, Jan
$10
calculates the molecular weights of compounds in the preparation and dilution of
solutions and in the calculation of centrifugation parameters.
Elements
displays the Periodic Table of Elements used in chemistry. Eight separate
classes of elements are also included. To see detailed information about any
element, just type the element's symbol. BASIC is required.
Molecular Weight Calculator (MWC)
Goodsell, Bob
$10
calculates the molecular weight of chemical forumla that you enter (such as
H2O, Fe, etc.).
Molecule (MOLECU2)
Blanco, Carlos D.
$0
reads a description of a molecule from a file and creates an orthographic and
light-shaded view of a spherical representation of the molecule. A sample
file is included with instructions for creating your own. Different views of
the molecule can be specified on the command line. Requires VGA, 640k and a
12mhz+ CPU.
Neural Net Simulator 1.0 (NNS)
Mitchell, Fred
$?
simulates 256 neurons, each with 16 inputs from other neurons. Some can be
inhibitory dentrites, depending on the inhibitory selection, which is made by
random chance, to an average percentage specified by the "% Inhibitory" input.
The wiring is also done automatically. You can also set the stimulus, and
observe the response. We doubt that you will get anything out of this unless
you already know something about the subject.
Planets2
Swanets, Terry
$5
is an educational solar system model that displays the orbits of all the
planets starting with a specified time and advancing at a specified rate. It
appears to require EGA, although it was not mentioned in the docs.
Physics 3.1a
Baker, Bruce N.
$20
is a Physics tutorial that covers Classical Physics, Relativity Physics,
Electrostatics/Dynamics, Optics, Math, and Conversions. (The author can no
longer be reached at the address provided in the documentation.)
Solar System Simulator (SOLSYS)
will create and simulate a solar system. You tell it how many planets
you would like, up to a maximum of 40, and it will give each plate a position,
mass, and velocity randomly. It will then calculate and display the motions
of each planet, along with their distances from the sun - all based on
Newton's Laws. The video was flakey when tested on a VGA, but worked on other
machines. Also, in one simulation, a planet sort of drifted away from the sun
and out into deep space, which got us to worrying a little: has the weather
seemed cooler to you lately? C source code is included and drivers for most
graphics cards are included, including monographics.
PTable 1.1
Yiu, Victor
$7
is a slick, menu-driven periodic table of the elements. In displays a
scrollable list with the element name, atomic number, Latin name, and atomic
weight. It can also display a complete table, or specific tables including
alkali metals, Nobel gases, metalloids, and others. (Not on this disk. Ask for
disk #8993.)

Bang
Metamorphosis Educational Program
$15
#12035
reviews the history and developments in the Big Bang theory. It includes
what's new in the theory, what happended at time=0, a quark, and the theory of
NOTIME.
Integral Scientist
Integral Scientific Software ASP
$50
#4337
is a set of programs for scientists, science educators and students. It
includes a computerized periodic table, an element information database with
over 50 items of information per element, a flash-card learning program, 30
categories of unit conversions, a chemical solutions calculator, solvent
selection database, molecular weight calculator, dilution calculator and user
customizable data viewer. Requires 560k+ of disk space.
Pendulum 3.01 [PENDULUM]
Thieberger, Peter ASP
$23
#4240 [March 1994 CD]
teaches about pendulums by letting you create and experiment with a computer
simulated pendulum. Mass, length, amplitude, gravity and friction of the
pendulum can be varied. You can find out how a pendulum would react on the moon
or what would happen if gravity could become negative. Requires 512k of RAM.
Physics Tutorial
Potter, Tom
$20
#4320
is an introductory tutorial on physics. It is arranged according to the
relationships between properties.
SpookyLite 2.0
Remtink Company
$0
#4551
demonstrates the three mysterious ways in which light or electromagnetic
radiation behaves. It is a very good introduction to the theory of relativity.
Requires 640K RAM.
Chemistry Concepts 4.0b
Miller, Bruce M.
$0
#7435/3005 [4 Disks]
is a comprehensive set of programs intended to help students in the study of
chemistry. They are designed to be used along with the student's chemistry
textbook. They were written by a high school chemistry teacher of 34 years.
The programs are aimed at helping in areas that have proven to give students
the greatest difficulty.
The programs are archived onto four disks, but de-archive onto twelve 360k
disks, from which the system can be run, or onto a hard disk. (When running on
a hard disk, we had to do ASSIGN A=C to get the program to run.)
H. Erik Ramsey, Falls Church, VA: "Typing ALLOCATE or RT1 does not work. These
are the only two executable files included and there's no documentation advising
where to register the program."
PsL: First extract the contents of CCALL.ZIP. Then read README.DOC. This
outlines how to extract the contents of each ZIP file onto a diskette. Each disk
will then be a "lesson". It also tells you how to run the program. The author's
name and address is at the end of README.DOC.
Chemical
Puhl, Larry
$15
#7029/874
is a molecular modeling program to aid in the formation of three dimensional
pictures of chemicals. Atoms are selected from a Periodic Table and electron
orbital information retrieved. The atoms are then bonded and the chemical is
displayed as it is being constructed. The chemical can be viewed from
different directions by using the up and down cursor keys and the V command.
If desired the Hybrid and Ionize commands can be used to alter the orbitals
before bonding. Atoms can be bonded into groups, then the groups bonded to
other groups to make large chemicals.
Chemview
Puhl, Larry
$15
#7029/1001
displays the three-dimensional rotation of the atoms of selected molecules.
EGA card and monitor are required. Colorful, smooth graphics, interesting,
educational.
Cold Fusion 2.1
Remtink
$19
#7029/2015
is an animated graphics program illustrating the various theories proposed to
explain the reported cold fusion experiments at the University of Utah and
Brigham Young University. These reports appeared in March of 1989 and caused
great excitement in the field of physics throughout the world.
Video-Chem
